This study presents the main sustainable development practices that are undertaken by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Catalonia and the main motivations to put them into practice, as well as the perception of companies with regards to the public policies promoting sustainable development. The areas of activity that have been studied are those related with the environment, human resources management and community involvement. The study analyses the commitment that backs the adoption of these practices and the opinion that companies have about the public policies that should be put into place to stimulate them. The results show that the most frequent practices are those related with human resources and that the degree of development of the different practices is positively related with the level of entrepreneurship and company turnover.
