This study contributes to a better understanding of the specific challenges which small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face in their responsible management of the supply chain, based on the study of four Catalan SMEs of the cleaning sector. In particular, it examines strategies and tools used for integrating CSR criteria, and it analyses motivations, factors that facilitate or hinder this process and the perceived benefits. The studied companies receive little CSR pressure from their customers, and in turn exert little pressure to their suppliers, so there seems not to be a transmission effect of CSR requirements along the supply chain of the cleaning sector. However, we note that all the studied companies have incorporated CSR criteria into their actions proactively, especially in human resources policies, which are strategic to their business.
